Thermally cycling samples of amorphous GeTe reveal a number of intriguing transport properties of the material. These include an anomalous temperature dependence of the dynamics following heating the sample from an equilibrium state. A peculiar transition in the transport characteristics observed in the temperature range ≈310-340K hints on a structural change.
Results of flicker noise measurements across these temperatures are suggestive of a phase transition. The spectrum of the noise varies with temperature radically different than in amorphous GeSbTe. This is discussed in terms of the different ring statistics of these materials. The study demonstrates the advantages of using transport and noise measurements to monitor the real-time dynamics and subtle structural transitions in amorphous solids.
